Employment History Survey of ASCE’s Younger Members-2003 Follow-Up Survey

2004
A follow-up employment survey to the original 2001 survey was sent out to 97 volunteer participants. Approximately 50% returned completed surveys. From this response, the author determined that, as in the first survey, a majority worked for general consulting firms and had a very low change rate of employers. Unlike the first survey, these respondents had not changed their positions as much. They believed the type of work was the most important factor in job selection and felt company stability was now an important factor when selecting a job. Their 2003 average salary was $53,529, approximately $8,600 more than their 2001 average salary. Also, those who had gone for their Professional Engineer (P.E.) license had received some sort of support from their employer, usually payment for the license fee or provision of review materials. A large majority of the respondents had taken continuing education courses even though most of their employers did not require them. In addition, all employers provided medical benefits while only some provided other benefits such as dental insurance or bonuses.
