The optic nerve or cranial nerve II (CN II) is a direct outpouching of the telencephalon surrounded by subarachnoid space. It carries visual information to the brain by maintaining a strict visuotopic represention at all intermediate relay stations. The entire visual pathway, function, pathology and major clinical syndromes are outlined. Some cases are also provided.
