Return Migration, Labor Reintegration and Expectancies. Guidelines for Development Policies

2021
In this paper, we study the conditions of economic reintegration of returning migrants from United States, which is one of the greatest challenges they face returning to Mexico. To analyze and evaluate the process of economic reintegration, a survey was applied to returned migrants with the objective of collecting information to identify and determine four types of mobility. The four types of mobility are: sectoral, labor, income, and job position, considering a before and after the migration experience. The results show the reintegration has not been easy in most cases. In fact, most households improved their economic situation in comparison with their condition before migrating. Additionally, most have expectations of returning to the US, or want their children to study and live there. Therefore, these migrants were not completely satisfied with their economic reintegration process. In the end, we propose some guidelines for public policy in economic development and economic reintegration.
