Primary Total Wrist Arthroplasty

2021
Total wrist arthroplasty provides pain relief, preserves motion, and improves function in degenerative post-traumatic conditions and in inflammatory autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Functional indications and expectations must be thoroughly discussed with the patient. Surgery aims to restore the natural balance between joint stability and a functional arc of motion; its quality is based on the understanding of implant mechanics and design and on the correct handling and reconstruction of the periarticular capsular, ligamentous, and tendon structures. Postoperative rehabilitation is carried out with the assistance of a hand therapist and appropriate splinting techniques.
