Autonomous functioning thyroid nodule successfully treated with radioiodine in a 3 and a half-year-old boy

2012
Hyperthyroidism is rare in paediatric age group, the most common cause being Gravesdisease. Very few cases of autonomous functioning thyroid nodule (AFTN) as a cause of paediatric hyperthyroidism have been reported. We herein report a case of AFTN in a 3 and a half-year-old boy who had become symptomatic with a swelling in the neck and hypermetabolic features at the age of 8 months. He was successfully treated with 131 I radioablation, which rendered him euthyroid.
