A new sparse channel estimation algorithm for MB-OFDM UWB systems based on channel shortening

In this paper, a novel sparse channel estimation algorithm based on channel shortening is proposed for multi-band OFDM ultra wide-band communications. In this algorithm, channel shortening is first used to cancel the inter symbol interference (ISI) and the inter carrier interference (ICI) resulted in the shortage of length of cyclic prefix. Then the sparse structure property of UWB channel is used to detect the non-zero tap which avoids non-important zero taps’ estimation and promotes the performance of the algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the LS algorithm and the DFT algorithm wouldn’t estimate the channel correctly when the length of cyclic prefix is shorter than the length of channel, while the new algorithm has good preference.
