Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome

2019
Abstract Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is an unusual rectal disorder. Pathophysiology remains unclear but constipation, rectocele, and mucosal ischemia have been linked to its development. Some patients are asymptomatic and the ulcer is discovered after a screening colonoscopy. Bleeding, tenesmus, and mucoid secretion are some of the clinical features. Treatment consists of improving constipation with laxatives and biofeedback and local therapy. Surgery is an alternative when SRUS is refractory to conservative treatment or when associated to structural pelvic-floor disorders.
