Identification and Spatial Analysis of Water Sensitive Industries in Taihu Basin

2019
Taihu Lake Basin is one of the largest comprehensive industrial bases in China. The rapid industrialization increases the pressure on resources and environment in this region, for which the unreasonable industrial layout and unbalanced industry development are important reasons. In this paper, the sectoral and spatial distribution of water contamination in Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou, three industry developed cities in the Taihu Lake Basin, were studied by using the data of discharge permit limits in the National Discharge Permit System (NDPS). The main water sensitive industries and their pollution pattern in Taihu Lake Basin were identified through discharge contribution analysis. In addition, the perspective of pollution distribution was given by means of geocoding and GIS analysis, mainly kernel density estimation (KDE) and inverse distance weight (IDW). The results show that textile, paper making, ferrous metal smelting and calendaring industry, chemical industry, pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and metal products industry are the main water sensitive industries, and the spatial distribution of pollution influences the surrounding water quality. This study provides a decision-making basis for the upgrading and restructuring of industry in Taihu Lake Basin in the future.
