Mean excitation energies and barkas-effect parameters for Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe extracted from proton and alpha particle stopping power measurements

1983
Abstract The latest version of modified Bethe-Bloch stopping power theory has been applied to all reliable extant measurements of stopping powers of Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe for protons and alpha particles in order to ascertain the mean excitation energy and a single parameter in the Barkas-effect correction term for each target gas. Two approaches to inclusion of the Barkas-effect (low velocity projectile- z 3 ) correction term have been extensively investigated. Recommended mean excitation energies for Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe are 130, 184, 328 and 505 eV, respectively.
