Spain Embraces the Tram

Over the last 20 years, Spain has seen a significant increase in light rail transit projects throughout the country. This article reviews recent development and future plans. The first modern tram line opened in Valencia in 1994. Nine cities followed suit over the next decade. These networks range in size from 4.9 to 52.4 km. Currently, at least a dozen more projects have been proposed or are already under construction. Projects in Valencia, Basque country, Barcelona, Andalucia, Seville, Malaga and Zaragoza are highlighted.
