Numerical modelling of long waves and moored ship motions

2013
Moored ship motions, especially for large vessels, are significantly influenced by long-period waves associated with incoming swells. In this study it is shown how numerical modelling with Delft3D-Surfbeat can be used to simulate long wave penetration in a harbour. Subsequently, the response of moored container ships is simulated. A MoorMaster system is simulated as an alternative to a conventional mooring layout to reduce the ship motions and improve the associated quay crane productivity. The Port of Ngqura in South Africa is used as a practical case study.
