The AIDS epidemic among injection drug users in New York City has been one of the largest local AIDS epidemics in the industrialized countries. More than 100000 injection drug users have been infected with HIV, and more than 50 000 cases of AIDS have been reported among injection drug users, their sexual partners, and their children in New York City. 1 These AIDS cases among injection drug users and their sexual partners in New York City account for almost one tenth of the total AIDS cases in the United States 2 and amount to more than the total cases of AIDS that have occurred in any sin
