Eficacia clínica de una pasta desensibilizante de uso en consultorio a base de arginina al 8.0% y carbonato de calcio Clinical efficacy of an in-office desensitizing paste containing 8.0% arginine and calcium carbonate
2013
Objective: To assess the clinical effi cacy of an in-offi ce desensitizing paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate compared to that of a fl uoride-free prophylaxis paste in reducing dentin hypersensitivity immediately following dental polishing. Material and methods: A random double-blind, parallel-group clinical study. Forty male and female subjects with a tactile hypersensitivity score (Yeaple Probe) of 10-20 g of force and an air blast hypersensitivity score of 2 or 3 on the Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale. Each subject was randomly assigned to one of the following groups: 1) Colgate ® Sensitive Pro-Relief ™ in-offi ce desensitizing fl uoride-free paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate (experimental group) and 2) regular fl uoride-free prophylaxis paste (control group). A baseline assessment was made and then another immediately following the application of the treatment. Results: The experimental group exhibited a statistically signifi cant reduction of 101.4% in tactile hypersensitivity scores (p < 0.05) compared to the control group, which displayed a 24.6% reduction compared to the baseline scores. With regard to air blast hypersensitivity scores, both groups exhibited a statistically signifi cant reduction (65.8 and 36.9% respectively) (p < 0.05). However, the results were more positive in the experimental group. The difference between both groups was statistically signifi cant, with the experimental group providing superior results in comparison with the control group in terms of swift reduction in dentin hypersensitivity (i.e., 61.6 and 46.2% (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results show that a single application of a desensitizing paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate provides more instant relief for dentin hypersensitivity compared to a regular fl uoride-free prophylaxis paste.
