Labelling and claims in foods containing omega-3 fatty acids

2013
Abstract: The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released a series of scientific opinions on health claims for omega-3 s for a variety of health conditions, and has proposed a specific daily recommended intake for omega-3 fatty acids of 250 mg/day as the labelling reference intake value. In the USA, adequate intakes (AI) have been set only for short-chain omega 3 ALA. No daily intake recommendations or adequate intakes have been set up for EPA or DHA. Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has issued recommended daily allowances of EPA and DHA to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This chapter discusses labelling and regulatory guidelines for foods and supplements fortified with omega-3 s, including information that can be included on packaging labels regarding nutrient content and health claims.
