CASE STUDY OF WARNING SIGNS FAILING TO MAKE A BAD DESIGN SAFE

2000
This paper is intended as a reminder that signs and markings cannot be counted on to make a location with poor geometric design safe. Traffic engineers sometimes "lie" to drivers, installing signs that are over-restrictive and even unwarranted, with the results that drivers will often ignore them when they conflict with a driver's view of the road and overall driving environment. Substandard geometric design may need to be corrected through reconstruction.
