Advanced stage 3 medication-related osteonecrosis of the mandible in a cancer patient on denosumab therapy (a case report)

2019
Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition, which could seriously affect life quality of patients on bisphosphonates or denosumab therapy, used for skeletal-related malignancies.  This paper presents a severe case of stage 3 osteonecrosis with a spontaneous double fracture of the mandible of a patient on denosumab therapy. Understanding the side effects of RANKL inhibitors and potential fast progression of osteonecrosis, especially in cases where patients are switched from bisphosphonates to denosumab, could increase the awareness and collaboration between oncologist and dentists and provide adequate preventive and treatment options for those patients.
