Surface Modification of Polyethersulfone Membranes

2017
Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes have been broadly used in scientific research and industrial processes due to their outstanding properties, such as high mechanical strength, high thermal stability, good chemical resistance and membrane forming ability. They have also been used in a cross range of applications, particularly wastewater treatment. This membrane is intrinsically hydrophobic in nature. Therefore, this property make PES membranes more prone to fouling, so surface modification techniques are an excellent pathway to improve hydrophobicity and enhance antifouling performance. In this chapter, we present different techniques to alleviate membrane fouling. This chapter sheds light specifically on surface modification of membranes. In this chapter, various types of modification techniques are outlined, including bulk modification, blending, grafting procedures and coating methods.
