The text analyzes verbal and visual strategies in Max Ernst's collage novels, La Femme 100 Tetes and Une Semaine de Bonte, in relation to the imagery of nineteenth-century French Roman noir. The analysis aims to demonstrate how the visual mechanisms of fear are reworked in Ernst's works, starting from heterogeneous materials.
