Trials to improve the sound quality and functions of various types of audio equipment utilizing digital signal processing technology have been actively pursued recently. A method which records digital audio into a cassette type VTR was already standardized as a PCM Audio Processor and in use since 1979. In 1981 Compact Disc system was standardized and has been rapidly permeating through the market as a replacement for conventional disc records.
