EXPERIENCES WITH MODIFIED ASPHALTS ON ROAD TEST SECTIONS IN SLOVAKIA

1996
In road construction practice there are well known properties of asphalt mixes with polymer modified binders. After research on the physical properties of asphalt with various additives, the refinery in Slovakia began industrial production of the modified asphalt binder MAB type APOLLOBIT. The subjects of the research program the mechanical properties of asphalt mixes with MAB and the influence of transportation and time on MAB. For this program ten test sections on Slovakia highway network were selected, constructed and observed. On the basis of the laboratory test results and the in-situ behaviour of the pavements in the ten test road sections, it can be said that MAB has better characteristics than conventional bitumen and that asphalt mixes have very good properties, including resistance to frost and water. The properties of MAB are very dependent upon their thermal conditions. MAB can be transported by tank truck to a distance up to 400 km and stored up to seven days.
