Advanced Pedestrian Actuated Control Signal using Image Processing Sensor

2009
By the advent of an aging society in Japan, traffic accidents related to elders have increased. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) measures them by extending green time and adapting the vulnerable group actuated signal control for them. But these measures faced problems in their convenience and flexibility. For example, these controls need pushing the button and the additional green time is constant. The MPD developed censors for detecting pedestrians. They had also problems in their deployment and reliability. Now image processing sensors have been in practical use. The MPD evaluates their ability and adapts them for signal control.
