The muscle action upon the biomechanics at proximal femur was studied, in an attempt to add an objective param- eter for medical decisions regarding weight bearing and re- habilitation, after fractures of that region. The electrical ac- tivities of five muscles from the hip region of 40 healthy volunteers were assessed by surface electromyography. They comprised nine female and 31 male subjects, with ages rang- ing from 21 to 55 years, within four different situations - three weight bearing situations, and an unloaded situation. Measurements were statically performed, in standing posi- tion. It was observed that total loading provided a signifi- cantly lower muscle global electric activity, with improved distribution among muscle groups, as compared with other proposed situations.
