A Preliminary Study on the Performance Evaluation of External Light-shelf according to the Arrangement Plan of Furniture during the Summer Solstice

2015
As the lighting energy consumption in buildings increases, various studies are being carried out to investigate this important issue. The effectiveness of light-shelf for reducing the lighting energy consumption has been verified and various studies are being carried out to research this further, but there has been no study yet done focusing on actual environments such as the arrangement of furniture. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish preliminary data for the design of light-shelf by carrying out a performance evaluation of a light-shelf according to the arrangement plan of furniture based on a testbed of actual size. 1) The uniformity ratio of illumination was highest at the light-shelf angle of 30 in the case where there was no arrangement of furniture and where furniture was arranged in residential space while it was highest at the light-shelf angle of 20 in the case where there was an arrangement of furniture in office space. 2) The amount of electricity used for lighting was calculated to ascertain how much energy could be saved, and the light-shelf angle of 40 was determined to be the most efficient in the case where there was no arrangement of furniture and where furniture was arranged in residential space while the same amount of electricity for lighting was used in the case where there was an arrangement of furniture in office space regardless of the angle. Proper factors and the performance of light-shelf vary according to the arrangement of furniture when designing the light-shelf so that it is an element which should be considered in light-shelf related studies.
