Change in the Condylar Morphology after Orthodontic Treatment in a Patient with JIA

2014
Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in condylar morphology in a patient 16 years old suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), polyarticular, ANA positive in drug treatment with Methotrexate, after 12 months of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances self-ligating and increases occlusal evaluated on panoramic radiograph at T0 and T1. Materials and methods: Data relating to changes in the TMJ condyle were obtained through the comparison of the 'OPT, performed before orthodontic treatment and 12 months after the' beginning therapy. To assess the degree of involvement of the condyle was used the classification proposed by Rohlin and Peterson. Results and conclusions: The evaluation of the panoramic radiograph at 12 months, showed that orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances increases self-ligating and occlusal composite is effective in stimulating the anatomical condylar remodeling in a patient with JIA. The prevalence of TMJ involvement in these patients, even in case of the absence of clinical symptoms, is a warning sign of the onset of temporomandibular disorders. In this study it is shown that a proper orthodontic treatment, associated with increases in occlusal may 'lead to improvement of joint and muscle disorders related to the disease.
