2013
The objectives of this study were to describe the epidemiological and evolutionary features of severe malaria in women of childbearing age and to identify predictors of death in this age group. This study was part of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of Fann Hospital in Dakar was retrospective, descriptive, analytical referred to. It was made from the records of patients age d 15-49 years hospitalized for severe malaria from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2009. During our study period, 9827 patients were admitted to the service, including 468 cases of severe malaria (294 men and 174 women) with a sex ratio of 1.69. Of the 174 women, 124 were aged 15-49 years, the proportions of 71.3% women and 26.5% for all cases of malaria. The average age was 26 ± 9 years. The majority of patients (n = 61) had no profession. The notion of prior treatment was found in the majority of patients (p = 0.03). In terms of progression, the mortality rate was 12.90%. In univariate analysis, the main clinical factors associated with death were jaundice (p = 0.000), a Glasgow 52.35 (p = 0.01) and creatinine> 9.375 (p = 0.002). The main factors associated with mortality in multivariate analysis were coma (p = 0.004), jaundice (p = 0.003) and hemoglobin ≤ 8.3 g / dl (p = .03). Proper preventive and curative measures appear necessary to reduce mortality in this age group.
