The authors report principal findings from a survey on attitudes toward marriage and family in Japan. Data are from interviews with 9636 unmarried men and women aged 18-49 who were interviewed in 1992. Information is provided on marriage intentions costs and benefits of marriage obstacles to marriage desired marriage types (love match or arranged) attitudes toward residing with parents after marriage friends of the opposite sex desired number of children and timing of first marriage.
