Modelling in School Mathematics: Past Achievements—Current Challenges

This chapter describes my 55 years of learning about teaching modelling, from initial explorations through a sequence of modelling projects at the Shell Centre. After introducing some core concepts, the chapter focuses on the design strategies and tactics that were learned in each project, including roles for technology. A discussion of specific design issues in teaching modelling leads into asking why improvements are so difficult to achieve on a large scale. Elements of a way forward are outlined.
