2021
The study area of this research, the district of Sao Joao do Abade, at the municipality of Curuca, in Para, Northern Brazil, is one of the main fishing warehouses in the region. It presents a diversity of slaughterhouses, as well as warehouses and the municipal Market. Besides that, the district join in conditions to add relevance to the development of the fishing sector. In Curuca, artisanal commercial fishing is practiced in accordance with Article 8 §1 of Law 11.959/2009 (Brazilian National Policy for the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries). This research considers that Curuca’s artisanal commercial fishermen are classified in two distinct groups: the autonomous fishermen and the fishermen subordinated to the middlemen, in which both sell their fishes in the district of Sao Joao do Abade. In an attempt to maintain and survive as a social segment in the fishing activity, these two groups developed territorial strategies. In order to analyze these pragmatic actions and the conflicts between these agents, it was used a participatory mapping, with the aid of a Global Positioning System (GPS), with these social actors, as well as structured interviews that included on-site questionnaires and photographic surveys on that particular reality.
