Inter-Area Oscillation Damping Considering Time-Varying Communication Delay of Wide-Area Power System

2021
This paper proposes a wide-area damping controller for reducing inter-area oscillation in power systems. A two-area power system is used as a test system. Two generators are present in each region of the two-area test system. To provide enough damping in the power system, a supplementary damping controller is provided with the thyristor-controlled-series-capacitor. A state feedback control mechanism is adopted to design the damping controller. The effect of delay due to communication between power system and controller is also taken into account. A delay-dependent stabilization criterion based on linear matrix inequality is developed using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional for the closed-loop power system. The feedback controller parameters are obtained from the solution of stabilization criterion. Using these parameters, the wide-area damping controller is realized.
