Analysis of ERS-1 SAR data for the geological and morphological characterization of the Campania area

1995
Abstract Spaceborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sensors can collect a great amount of data of the same area with different geometries of acquisition. This paper is concerned with the geological analysis of multidate ERS-1 SAR imagery of the area which extends from the Phlegrean Fields to Sorrento (Campania, Italy). Detailed investigations have been carried out on a number of subscenes among which are the Phlegrean Fields, Vesuvius and the Palinferno drainage basin. The results of this research show that geological interpretation of volcanic areas can greatly benefit from the joint analysis of different look direction SAR imagery and multipass interferometric fringes.
