Nuevos datos sobre el desarrollo temprano de la briología en España: briófitos recolectados por Lorenzo de Prestamero y Xavier de Arízaga en La Rioja y País Vasco en el siglo XVIII

espanolLorenzo de Prestamero (1733-1817) y Xavier de Arizaga (1748-1830) fueron dos pioneros de la Botanica en La Rioja y Pais Vasco. Aunque trabajaron principalmente con plantas vasculares, tambien aportaron datos sobre briofitos, de los primeros que tenemos constancia en Espana. Hemos podido estudiar las recolecciones de Prestamero porque en la actualidad se conserva gran parte de su herbario. Por el contrario, de Arizaga tenemos los manuscritos enviados al Real Jardin Botanico (Madrid), mientras que la inmensa mayoria de su herbario parece haberse extraviado. Se comentan los siete briofitos recogidos por Prestamero en el Pais Vasco entre 1781 y 1794, mientras que se realiza un analisis critico de los 16 briofitos citados por Arizaga en 1785 en La Rioja y Pais Vasco. Although they worked mainly on vascular plants, they also contributed data on bryophytes, among the first ones recorded in Spain. We have been able to study the collections of Prestamero because nowadays most of his herbarium is still preserved. On the contrary, we only have the manuscripts that Arizaga sent to the Royal Botanical Garden (Madrid), whereas the greatest part of his herbarium seems to be lost. The seven bryophytes collected by Prestamero in the Basque Country between 1781 and 1794 are discussed, whereas a critical analysis is made on the 16 bryophytes recorded by Arizaga in 1785 in La Rioja and Basque Country. The different botanical legacy from Arizaga and Prestamero illustrates the importance of preserving herbaria.
