Kadayath Abraham George

Kadayath Abraham George (“George”) was born on 7 May 1943 in Vadavacode, a village just outside Cochin, Kerala, South India. He was the youngest of eight children, two boys and six girls. George’s father died at the age of 40, when George was only 2 years old, and was very forward thinking, like his son, beginning a memorial school, the first school in Vadavacode. George, as he was so fondly known, graduated from Ludhiana Christian Medical College in 1967. He took his DA in 1969 and acquired his MD in 1973, also in the Punjab. He came to Belfast in September 1974 as a senior registrar in anaesthesia. He subsequently became a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1975 and took up his consultant post in anaesthetics in Belfast City Hospital in 1977. He subsequently took a one year sabbatical in Portland, Oregon, in 1985 as a visiting professor at the Oregon Health Sciences University and Hospital. For 30 years George gave superb service to his patients in Belfast City Hospital. During the trauma years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, he anaesthetised many hundreds of patients wounded by gunshot and bomb blast. …
