The present invention relates to uses for glycemic control and antioxidation of pheophorbide A derived from a crude extract of Capsosiphon fulvescens and, more specifically, to a pharmaceutical composition to treat or prevent obesity, diabetes, or diabetic complications, a composition for antioxidant cosmetics, and a functional plant, which contain pheophorbide A as an active ingredient, and a method for extracting the pheophorbide A. The pharmaceutical composition and functional food, which contain pheophorbide A as an active ingredient, according to the present invention, have an effect of suppressing hyperglycemia symptoms by having an activity inhibit α-glucosidase and aldose reductase which are involved in carbohydrate digestion mechanisms, are useful in the treatment or prevention of metabolic diseases including obesity, diabetes, and diabetic complications by inhibiting glycation, and are useful as a functional food by having the effects of delaying the aging process and recovering biologically active functions due to anti-oxidizing function of the material.
