After an appraisal of the rail-bus, the author sets out the conditions to be met by a diesel railcar for short-distance service, and discusses in detail the basic concept of the drive, the base plan, the coach body design and the interior furnishings, also the power unit and running gear. Special importance is attached to design measures to reduce noise.
