Optical properties and radiation shielding studies of europium doped modifier reliant multi former glasses

2021
Abstract An exclusive set of multicomponent glasses (BTPME) with composition 39B2O3−20PbO–15TeO2−10P2O5−15MO–1Eu2O3 (where M = BaO, CaO, SrO, Li2O, ZnO) have been fabricated. The structural and elastic features of the glasses are parameterized to define the effect of modifiers in the system. XRD, FTIR analyses were carried out for the evaluation of structural and compositional identification. The glass containing Zn (BTPZE) stands out of all the glasses based on the oxide ion polarizability, mechanic moduli that predicted its structure to be tightly packed. The glasses were undergone complex neutron shielding and gamma shielding evaluations based on macroscopic cross-sections calculation and Phy-X software, respectively. When comparing Li containing glass (BTPLE) and Ca containing glass (BTPCE), the fast neutron mass removal cross-section (ΣR/ρ) decrease 3.5 times the partial density increases only 1.6 times – a result is a decrease in ΣR from 0.1469 cm−1 to 0.1353 cm−1. In terms of radiation shielding ability, the greater effective atomic number (Zeff) typically signifies that the Ba containing glass (BTPBE) has the greatest potential in this field.
