Maxillomandibular advancement surgery for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and long-term surgical stability

2011
Objective To evaluate the outcome of maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) in China and to examine the long-term surgical stability. Methods Nine patients underwent MMA for the treatment of OSAHS.All the patients were examined with polysonmography, cephalometric analysis and 3-dimentional CT at Tl(3 months before surgery),T2(3-6 months after surgery) and T3(>1 year after surgery). Results Mean apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) decreased from 49.5 events · h-1 before therapy to 7.8 events· h-1 3 months postoperatively and to 8.5 events · h-1 one year after surgery.Oxygen saturation significantly increased after surgery. No significant changes were found in follow-up data between 3 months and one year after surgery. The position of the maxilla and mandible, measurements in upper airway and postoperative objective measures of efficacy showed relatively stable. Conclusions The MMA technique for the treatment of OSAHS was effective in patients with severe OSAHS.The results from this study indicated that maxillomandibular advancements was relatively stable.
