Study on the insertion of a braking resistance for the improvement of dynamic stability of a real test (benchmark) network

2003
This article presents a study on the insertion of a braking resistance with the aim of improving the transmission limits in a permanent regime. This transmission limit is also known as the dynamic stability. Several techniques and equipment are developed with the aim to improve the dynamic stability. One of those is the insertion of a braking resistance in the post contingency state network. The insertion of a bang-bang type is more efficient in terms of stability and making immediate fault detection. The instant of withdrawal is also important and needs to be determined precisely. The control developed in this study is of the local type. The results present the effect of insertion of braking resistances of different values on the network stability for the duration of the insertion. The gain in current transmission in permanent regime is presented for a braking resistance of 2 GW.
