Performance Optimization of Electrically Small Microstrip Patch Antennas on Finite Ground Planes

A new technique to obtain greater than 30% 2:1 VSWR bandwidth, using a coaxial probe fed rectangular patch antenna, has been presented. The exact quality factor Q of the antenna is calculated using its input impedance and is compared to the approximate Q expressions applicable for electrically small antennas (ESAs). The D/Q optimization technique, given by Gustafsson et al., has been used for the performance optimization of the designed antennas on finite ground planes.
