Abstract 10250: Associations of Adiponectin and Leptin With Measures of Cardiac Structure and Function Among African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study

2015
Introduction: Adipokines are associated with measure of cardiac remodeling. Studies assessing the effects of adipokines among those with and without common risk factors such as hypertension, obesity and type 2 diabetes are sparse. Thus, the objective of our investigation was to assess the association of adiponectin and leptin with measures of myocardial structure and function among African Americans--a group with a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: The study sample included 4,866 African American participants from the Jackson Heart Study. Multivariable adjusted linear models were used to determine the association of adiponectin and leptin with echocardiographic measures of myocardial structure and function including left ventricular (LV) mass index, and E/A ratio. Stratified analyses were conducted among participants with and without hypertension, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Results: In participants who were not obese, LV mass index was directly associated with adiponectin and inve...
