2018
Here, we review the results of Russian and foreign researches that are directed to evaluating the role of gamma waves of brain bioelectric activity in higher mental functions in humans under normal conditions and in neurological and mental diseases. The dynamics of gamma activity is analyzed in processes of consciousness, attention, memory, visual-motor coordination, cognitive activity, and meditation. The manuscript includes current data on the role of EEG gamma oscillations in the genesis of borderline disorders and mental and neurological diseases (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorders, depression, autism, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and stroke). Further studies of variations in gamma activity and their relationship with CNS disorders will expand the notions of the pathophysiological mechanisms and the role of high-frequency oscillations in brain functions.
