A system which processes a progressively scanned EDTV wide screen signal so that the signal is compatible with a standard NTSC receiver, generates an auxiliary signal YT containing vertical temporal information derived from the image field difference information of the progressively scanned signal. The auxiliary signal facilitates the conversion of the encoded NTSC-compatible signal (NTSCF) to a progressively scanning format in a wide screen receiver which utilizes progressive scanning.
