Thyroid Function and Human Breast Milk-Reply
1983
In Reply .—The findings of Oberkotter and Tenore, when combined with our results, suggest that mothers' milk contributes to the milieu of their infants' thyroid function. Also, Oberkotter and Tenore have demonstrated a specific-binding protein for thyroid hormones in human breast milk, indicating a physiologic role of breast milk in transferring thyroid hormones from the mother to the infant. 1 Preliminary data from our continuing clinical investigations show significantly greater spot T 4 values in breast-fed infants than formula-fed infants at 2 to 3 weeks of age. I agree with Oberkotter that additional studies are warranted.
