Burden of schizophrenia:A review

Through systematically reviewing the studies carried out in China and other places in the world,we summarized the research progress in the field of disease burden of schizophrenia and the methodologies used in current studies.For the economic burden of schizophrenia,data were not always the same,as there were significant discrepancies among different countries or areas in terms of mental health service system,level of economic development,medical insurance,etc.However,it was clear that schizophrenia had been introducing heavy economic burden to the patients who suffered from it,their families,the paying parties of medical insurance as well as the wider society.The family burden and society burden arisen from schizophrenia should also cause the attention of the public.The government needs to improve the risk-sharing mechanism,and provide sufficient medical and social security to help the patients accessing systematic anti-psychotic treatment and achieving functional recovery.Therefore the government can play a key role in reducing the disease burden.
