Methodological Issues in Researching Children and Digital Media
2020
There is a need for nuanced, reflective research that seeks to
understand children’s digital media cultures. Several methods
for researching children’s digital media use, with a focus on
interpretive methodologies, are apparent. The chapter’s
introduction argues for research to take account of
children’s digital cultures surrounding media engagement,
with the two sections that follow discussing different approaches to
research. The first section describes a project that researched
children’s play-based media cultures and discusses the
interplay between employing observation and interviewing children.
The second section provides an overview of approaches to children as
participant researchers.
