Fluoride and Calcium Interrelationship in Maternal and Cord Blood Sera
1986
Abstract Maternal and cord serum pairs were collected from 121 deliveries. The maternal total serum F was found to be 0.072±0.051 μg/ml, while the fetal total serum F was 0.055±0.028 μg/ml. Total F levels in maternal serum were found to be significantly higher than those in cord serum, but the difference in ionic F levels between maternal and cord sera was not statistically significant. On the other hand, the total and ionic Ca levels in maternal serum were found to be significantly lower than those in cord serum. A positive correlation was found between the ionic F levels in maternal and cord sera. Maternal ionic Ca levels correlated significantly and positively with those in cord serum. No significant correlation was found between Ca and F in maternal and cord sera. These findings do not support the concept of a placental barrier. Ionic F found in the serum indicates that there is no disequilibration of ionic F in maternal and fetal circulations.
