A Study on Application of the Smart Irrigation System through Drought Resilience Analysis

2015
Increasing drought and flood frequency is one of the challenges the Earth is facing in consequence of global climate change. Drought seriously affects agriculture in terms of agricultural production. For an efficient drought management in drought-prone regions, it is crucial to have an accurate evaluation of drought-related factors. We analyzed the drought resilience in chinese cabbage cultivation by assessing the capacity per unit cultivation area to resist the effects of drought on chinese cabbage production in Chungbuk and Chungnam, two mid-western South Korean provinces. Drought diagnosis and intensity assessment were performed using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Our analysis revealed that Chungnam had 10% higher baechu production per unit cultivation area (kg/10a) compared to Chungbuk under the same drought conditions. Based on this result, we proposed the measures to implement the ICT-based smart irrigation system in Chungbuk this is more vulnerable to drought.
