Original Article Bioremediation of chloride from Tannery Effluent (Senkulam Lake in the Dindigul- Batlagundu highway) with Halobacterium species and Bacteria isolated from Tannery Effluent

2012
The tannery effluent was collected from Senkulam Lake in the Dindigul-Batlagundu highway. The physico - chemical parameters were estimated and had high chloride content (>12000 ppm) due to addition of various chemicals used in skins/hides processing. The tannery effluent was treated with the microbes isolated from the tannery effluent which was characterized and compared with four species of Halobacterium (Halobacterium halobium, Halobacterium salinarium, Halobacterium mediterranei and Halobacterium sp.) was incubated at different time intervals. A significant percentage reduction of chloride in the different Halobacterium species and at different incubation time (12, 18, 24, 30, and 36) was noted. Halobacterium species showed 62-68% of chloride reduction in 36 hours whereas 72% of chloride was reduced by isolated microbes from the treated tannery effluent and the 16S rRNA gene of this organism was analyzed and characterized as Gram negative rod shaped bacterium Aneurinibacillus aneurinilyticus and it was submitted in the National Centre of Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under the accession number DQ513424.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz © 2011 Universal Research Publications.
