Main directions of scientific and technical progress in the area of hydropower and electrical equipment of hydroelectric and pumped-storage stations

1. The main directions of scientific and technical progress in the area of hydropower and electrical equipment in the near future should be considered: the creation for HESs and PSSs being planned and reconstructed of highly efficient water passages of units with adjustable-blade, mixed-flow, and reversible pump-turbine (with an increase of efficiency by 1–1.5%), the design of which should meet the requirements of ecological cleanness, and the quality of manufacture should increase operating reliability, overhaul time, and availability factor; the units should be delivered by industry fully equipped with means and systems diagnosing the operating state; the creation and quantity-production of electrical equipment and switching apparatus of the required parameters and characteristics with increased reliability and operating life, primarily FASSFI and conductors with sulfur hexafluoride insulation for a voltage of 110–500 kV in earthquakeproof and fireproof versions, for HESs and PSSs being planned and reconstructed; increase of the reliability of computing machinery for APCS of HESs and PSSs; expansion of the range and a pronounced improvement of the quality and reliability of auxiliary equipment of HESs and PSSs (compressors, oil and water pumps, shut-off and regulating fittings, etc.); creation and quantity production of unified, completely automated units for small HESs planned for restoration and new construction which are adapted to automatic operation both on the power network and on an isolated load. 2. To meet the demands of new hydropower construction, reequipment, and reconstruction of existing electric power stations for the main technological equipment of HESs and PSSs planned by the USSR Energy Program and with consideration of the large volume of deliveries of units for export, it will apparently be required to expand the production areas of power-machinery construction plants for the manufacture of turbines and generators with orientation toward the production of turbines of the Syzran Turbine Plant.
