Effect of glutaurine (γ-l-glutamyl-taurine) on serum, hepatic, and renal uric acid levels

1981
When glutaurine (γ-l-glutamyl-taurine, Litoralon) isolated from bovine parathyroid and later synthesized, is administered orally to chicks over 1 week in doses of 0.5 and 2 μg100 g body wt, there is a significant reduction of the serum, hepatic, and renal tissue uric acid levels. In dogs parathyroidectomy led to a significant elevation of the serum uric acid level. This effect can be prevented by a 4-week oral treatment with 0.3 μg/kg body wt of glutaurine. Authors suppose that the changes of the uric acid level in hypo- and hyperparathyroidism can be attributed to the deficiency or excess of glutaurine produced by the parathyroid.
