A Study on Data Relay in Inter-vehicle Communication

The data relay is an important function for inter-vehicle communication and it is indispensable for information transmission in area where direct communication is not possible, for example in an area of poor visibility. Taking implementation of safety application into consideration, we have investigated feasibility on 5.8GHz DSRC data relaying in an experimental situation in the field under severe time constraints. Since Data relay function is realized by multi-hop, we focused on multi-hop for high reliable and real time communication. As a result, it was shown that the area for reliable communication expands and that communication with a minimum delay within such an area is possible by multi-hop. We have obtained quantitative data by this experiment on multi-hop functions that is helpful for safe driving together with surrounding vehicles. This work was a part of ITS Standardization Project commissioned to JARI by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
